Celeste Milks: The Infamous Cat

Celeste came to the lake in June 2020. She was found abandoned in a local dairy barn, with her eyes barely opened. Since they didn’t have time to bottle feed her, she was transferred, window to window in the parking lot of the Red School House, complete with a doll bottle and milk replacer.

We had given our cat, Lily Bell to our granddaughter, and our silver Lab to a local lady because of our travels, but Marianne couldn’t be without a pet. Tiny Celeste was bottle fed, around the clock, until she chewed the nipples off the bottle because the milk wasn’t coming fast enough for the lady.

Celeste loves to travel with us in the car, boat, train, and plane. She has her own passport, and both US and International chips. She is very sociable and loves kids, often playing with grandkids and grandkids of the Yurkovics.

Our UPS man knows to check his truck for her before he leaves, and we know that one of the Fern sisters had to tell another delivery man that he couldn’t take the friendly cat with him because she belonged to the neighbors. Pat also rescued her from well-meaning people who had taken her home from the public boat launch. Luckily their dog didn’t like her (She’s afraid of big or barking dogs), and they brought her back the next day.

She is always on a leash in Italy (where she is famous), when she is outside, so she is free to come and go here at the lake. She does keep the mice and mole population down, but her bell keeps her from getting the birds.  Feel free to take her on the boat if she wants to(she rides with me in the canoe, sailboat, and rowboat), but please don’t take her in the car because we don’t want to encourage it.

Well – Celeste went missing around August 25th.   No one knew where she was for 18 days….

With the help of our great Duck Harbor neighbor, Dawn Tluczek Brooks, she was spotted on a website about an hour away from Duck Harbor in Peckville.  How the heck did she get there??!!  Not sure how it all came together but it sure did!!!

Carl and Marianne went to pick up Celeste outside of Scranton on September 12th.

While we may never know the whole story ….. we can only imagine since Celeste used to hang out at the state access that perhaps she climbed into a boat at the state access area or jumped into someone’s car, but there she was on a website in Peckville.  Carl & Marianne were indeed joyful, and they are deeply grateful to all that helped in this search and for the wonderful kind woman who had taken her in and had already fallen in love with her.

It's great to have Celeste back and wow…. We sure have some great neighbors here at Duck Harbor!!
