Duck Harbor Trivia!

Did you know…..????

In the late 1980’s there was no restrictions on the lake?? Meaning…. anyone was allowed to use any boat, anytime.

However, due to the huge waves made by some of the ski boats, some of the fisherman complained about the boats getting rocked and so they worked to get a petition to have a 10-horsepower motor lake full time. No motors larger than 10 horsepower? Yikes!

So, Skip Hillier and Jim McMyne set out to make a change. They had a conversation with Joe Harcum where they proposed the idea of having a “no wake” time at night that was reasonable. Joe thought it was a good idea, so Skip and Jim sent a proposal to Harrisburg Fish and Game Commission to request a “no wake” timeframe from 4pm to 10am.

Skip and Jim went “dock to dock” discussing this with homeowners to sign the petition which allowed for this “no wake” restriction as a more reasonable resolution and most people on the lake (including me) signed it.

Then, it was realized that while 6 hours may seem like a long time to waterski, most people that used the lake to ski, used it from 1pm – 4pm (not from 10am) so for 3 hours in the afternoons, the lake was really, really congested.

So… Skip and Jim re-proposed to the PA State Fish and Game Commission that the original proposal be extend even further to accommodate skiers from10am – 6pm for watersports and 6pm – 10am as a “no-wake” time for quiet.

The PA Fish Boat Commission liked Skip and Jim’s proposal and it was approved because the state found it reasonable. It’s also nice to know that after that after our change at Duck Harbor, other small lakes in PA instituted the same “no wake” hours rule because they too, found it reasonable.

I hope you all agree that the “No Wake” time is quiet time at our precious Duck Harbor Pond, and it works.

WHEW! Thank you Skip and Jim!!!
